Dangote Refinery has suspended petrol sales in naira, citing unsustainable allocations, and asked customers with pending payments to request refunds.
The Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals has suspended the sale of petrol in naira, effective September 28, 2025.
In a notice to customers, the company said its decision followed the exhaustion of its naira-crude allocations. “We write to inform you that Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals has been selling petroleum products in excess of our Naira-Crude allocations and, consequently, we are unable to sustain PMS sales in Naira going forward,” the statement read.
Customers with ongoing naira-based transactions have been advised to apply for refunds.
This marks the second suspension of naira-denominated sales in 2025, after a temporary halt in March over crude purchase obligations tied to the dollar.
The policy requiring local refineries to sell products in naira, introduced under President Bola Tinubu, was intended to strengthen energy security and reduce forex reliance. However, repeated disruptions have raised concerns over its sustainability and the government’s ongoing negotiations with the refinery.
