Dangote Refinery suspends Naira-based petrol sales

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has halted naira-based petrol sales from September 28, 2025, citing crude allocation shortages, amid labour disputes and rising fuel price concerns.

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has suspended the sale of petrol in naira, citing a depletion of its crude-for-naira allocation. In an email to customers at 6:42 p.m. on Friday, the refinery announced that the suspension takes effect Sunday, September 28, 2025. The notice, signed by the Group Commercial Operations of Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals and titled “Suspension of DPRP PMS Naira Sales – Effective 28th September 2025,” stated: “We write to inform you that Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals has been selling petroleum products in excess of our Naira-Crude allocations and, consequently, we are unable to sustain PMS sales in Naira going forward.” Customers with pending naira transactions were advised to request refunds.

The decision has unsettled marketers and renewed fears of higher pump prices and foreign exchange pressure. It follows labour unrest, as the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria condemned alleged mass layoffs and threatened nationwide solidarity actions. The refinery denied mass sacking, attributing recent dismissals to sabotage.
