“Government must rise to its responsibility or risk leaving the people with no option but to defend themselves,” David Mark warned.

Former Senate President David Mark has condemned the persistent killings in Benue State, warning that residents may be forced to resort to self-defence if the government fails to act.

Describing the attacks as “senseless, tragic and unacceptable,” Mark urged President Bola Tinubu to fulfil his constitutional duty of protecting citizens’ lives and property. “Government must rise to its responsibility or risk leaving the people with no option but to defend themselves,” he said in a statement by his spokesman, Paul Mumeh.

Mark expressed deep concern over the mounting loss of lives and properties, warning of rising desperation among citizens. He also called on Benue Governor Hyacinth Alia to intensify efforts to restore peace.

Appealing to grassroots leaders, including traditional and community heads, Mark stressed the importance of collaboration and lawfulness. “Despite the ongoing provocations, we must remain law-abiding, stay united, and uphold the enduring spirit of being our brothers’ keeper,” he said, urging the people to speak with one voice against the violence.
