Debate on state policing deepens tensions in the north

Northern governors have endorsed state police, urging lawmakers to act swiftly despite concerns it could be misused.

The Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) has thrown its weight behind the establishment of state police, saying it is crucial to tackling insecurity across the North and the country.

Isma’ila Uba Misilli, spokesman for the forum chairman and Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, confirmed that governors of the 19 northern states unanimously adopted the position at a meeting with traditional leaders in Kaduna. They urged the National Assembly to expedite legislative work on the matter.

Their stance aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s recent endorsement of decentralised policing during talks with Katsina leaders, where he described state police as “inevitable.” Groups like the Arewa Consultative Forum, Northern Elders Forum, Afenifere, and Middle Belt Forum have also voiced strong support.

While critics such as former Senator Shehu Sani warned state police could be abused by governors, advocates insist constitutional safeguards would prevent misuse. The National Economic Council is currently gathering states’ positions ahead of a final decision.
