To leave the party at this stage could be seen as a departure from the principles that guided your political growth
Renowned political strategist and founding Director‑General of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Earl Osaro Onaiwu, has urged Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State to remain committed to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), amid widespread speculation about a possible defection. Onaiwu emphasised that the PDP has been instrumental throughout Diri’s political journey — from Commissioner to Member of the House of Representatives, Senator, and currently, a two‑term Governor.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Onaiwu cautioned that defecting at this point could be interpreted as a break from the values that shaped Diri’s political advancement. “To leave the party at this stage could be seen as a departure from the principles that guided your political growth,” he stated.
He also noted that political realignments are common in Nigeria’s democratic environment but stressed that leaders must weigh long‑term consequences before making such decisions. “If there are challenges within the party, efforts should be made to resolve them. Dialogue and reform are essential elements of a strong democracy,” Onaiwu added.
Furthermore, Onaiwu highlighted the PDP’s robust institutional framework, national footprint and historical significance in shaping Nigeria’s political evolution. He encouraged Governor Diri to stay the course and finish strong within the party, reminding him that history often judges leaders by the critical decisions they make at pivotal moments.
