Defence Minister Bello Matawalle criticized FCT Minister Nyesom Wike for ignoring military advice and confronting a naval officer over a disputed land in Abuja.

According to a report from SAHARA REPORTERS, Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Bello Matawalle, has condemned the actions of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, for confronting a naval officer, Lieutenant Commander Yerima, at a disputed property site in Abuja despite advice from top military chiefs to wait for an investigation.

Speaking in an interview with DCL Hausa, Matawalle described the incident as “unfortunate,” noting that Wike had earlier contacted the Chief of Defence Staff and the Chief of Naval Staff, who advised patience. “Wike should not have exchanged words with the officer; he ought to have addressed his concerns through the officer’s superiors,” he said.

Matawalle stated that the officer acted lawfully and respectfully, adding, “Anyone who disrespects a soldier indirectly disrespects the President, who is the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.” He clarified that the officer “did not commit any offence under military regulations.”

The minister revealed that Wike ignored repeated advice to await an inquiry and “rushed to the site.” He confirmed that the Chief of Naval Staff has since visited the area to begin formal investigation into the land dispute, stressing that “any revocation of land should follow proper administrative and diplomatic procedures.”
