Delta Governor Sheriff Oborevwori ordered arrests of armed youths in Warri after clashes between Itsekiri and Urhobo groups.
Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has ordered security operatives to arrest anyone found with arms in Warri following violent clashes between Itsekiri and Urhobo youths on Saturday.
The confrontation occurred at Okere Roundabout, where rival groups exchanged gunfire and attacked one another, leaving several injured. Police operatives later dispersed the youths with tear gas.
In a statement issued by his Executive Assistant on Security Matters, Udoka Chika-dibie, Oborevwori warned against fueling ethnic hostilities. He said, “I am compelled to use this platform to caution all those fanning the flames of conflict in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State. The administration of His Excellency Rt. Hon. Elder Sheriff Oborevwori will not condone unrest among the tribes in that local government.”
The governor emphasized that the state would not relapse into unrest reminiscent of the 1999 crisis, stressing that security agents had been directed to “apprehend or neutralise anyone seen with arms.”
