This programme is important because we are remembering the day our progenitor, Obadoke Iyanda Oyatoosa, died at the Kiriji War Camp,” Alhaji Hameed Latoosa said.
Descendants of warriors who fought in the 16-year Yoruba Kiriji War have reunited in Ibadan, 140 years after the conflict ended.
The unification ceremony, themed “Aare Latoosa 140 Years Remembrance,” was held on Sunday at the Lekan Are Hall, Kakanfo Inn and Conference Centre.
Alhaji Hameed Latoosa, chairman of the planning committee, said the event honoured Aare Obadoke Latoosa, who died at the Kiriji War Camp on August 11, 1885. “It’s for the unity of all Yoruba people,” he said.
Arole Olutayo Ogedengbe of Ilesa stressed the need to sustain peace, while Fabunmi Akin urged Yoruba sons and daughters to embrace unity.
Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji, represented by Barr. Wale Ojo-Lanre, praised the initiative. Adedamola Are, CEO of Kakanfo Inn, described it as “a celebration of reconciliation and unity.”
Awards were presented to prominent individuals, including Oyebanji and Afe Babalola, with traditional rulers and dignitaries in attendance.
