Fubara will be reinstated to complete his four‑year tenure but must forgo any plans to seek a second term in 2027
President Bola Tinubu has agreed to reinstate Siminalayi Fubara as governor of Rivers State — but only on the condition that he will not seek re-election in 2027. The understanding emerged from a closed-door meeting Thursday night at the Presidential Villa involving Tinubu, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Governor Fubara, suspended Speaker Martin Amaewhule, and allied lawmakers.
Under the agreement, Fubara will complete his four‑year term, but must “forego any plans to seek a second term in 2027.” In return, Wike receives the right to appoint all 23 local government chairpersons — extending his political influence across the state. Fubara also pledges to settle outstanding allowances owed to the 27 Wike‑aligned lawmakers, who in turn will not pursue impeachment proceedings.
