WASHINGTON, D.C. — Calls for diaspora voting received the loudest applause at the Second Virtual Townhall hosted by the Nigeria Mission in Washington, D.C., alongside the Consulates in New York and Atlanta.

The meeting, held on Saturday, August 17, drew more than 300 participants in what organizers described as a “very successful” engagement. Attendees included Ambassador Samson Itegboje, Ambassador Auwalu Jega Namadina, Ambassador Abubakar Jidda, Mrs. Olufemi Gbadebo, Mrs. Temitope Abraham and Mr. Ebikela Jasper.

According to the organizers, the event was “warm, cordial and informative,” with extensive question-and-answer sessions. Citizens expressed support for improved service delivery at consulates, the restoration of services in San Francisco, and better handling of National Identification Number (NIN) applications.

However, it was the discussion on diaspora voting that drew the most enthusiasm. Participants urged Nigeria’s legislature to approve mechanisms that would allow Nigerians abroad to vote in future elections.

“Now deemed a model of how feasible it is to achieve when citizens and willing governments jointly set the agenda for impact,” the mission said in its post-event statement.

Other topics included concerns about anti-immigrant sentiment in the U.S. and opportunities for investment and trade.

Organizers said the town hall created awareness, mobilized support, and set benchmarks to hold officials accountable. Nigerians seeking assistance on visas and passports were encouraged to contact the embassy through its public complaints email.
