NERC says the 11 electricity distribution companies collected N546.71bn in Q2 2025 but lost N357.89bn to inefficiencies and unpaid bills.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has revealed that electricity distribution companies (DisCos) lost N357.89bn in the second quarter of 2025 due to billing inefficiencies and customers’ refusal to pay electricity bills.

According to NERC’s quarterly report, DisCos collected N546.71bn, representing less than 60 per cent of energy supplied, and recorded a billing shortfall of N167.25bn. An additional N190.64bn remained unpaid by customers.

The report showed that Eko DisCo had the highest billing efficiency of 96.67 per cent, while Yola DisCo posted the lowest at 58.38 per cent.

NERC also disclosed that the federal government incurred N514.35bn in subsidy debt to generating companies due to the absence of cost-reflective tariffs.

Electricity analyst Lanre Elatuyi urged NERC to enforce punitive measures, including credit cover enforcement, to compel DisCos to meet revenue targets and break what he described as a “vicious cycle of debt” affecting the power sector.
