The Nigeria Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has suspended its nationwide strike after the Federal Government pledged to begin immediate payment of the Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF), prompting doctors to resume work.

The Nigeria Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) on Sunday announced the suspension of its two-day-old nationwide strike, directing members to resume duties immediately.

The industrial action, which began Friday following the expiration of a 24-hour grace period after a previous 10-day deadline, had disrupted healthcare services across several states.

President of NARD, Dr. Tope Osundara, confirmed the suspension to THISDAY, citing the Federal Government’s commitment to promptly pay the Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF) to beneficiaries.

“Our strike has been suspended, doctors to resume work today. Some of our demands have been met. One of them is the payment of MRTF. Govt has also promised to look into other issues,” he said.

Osundara added that other outstanding concerns—including unpaid arrears, manpower shortages, and the release of corrected remuneration circulars—would be addressed subsequently. The decision was taken in goodwill to ensure Nigerians continued access to healthcare services.
