The price adjustment, according to JTB, is due to the introduction of enhanced security features in the number plate and driver’s licence and an incidental increase in production cost.
Nigerians will pay more for driver’s licences and vehicle number plates from June 8, 2025, following a price adjustment approved by the Joint Tax Board (JTB). The new rates, announced in a national daily, include a three-year motor vehicle licence at ₦15,000 (up from ₦6,350) and a five-year option at ₦21,000. Tricycle/motorcycle licences now cost ₦7,000 (three years) and ₦11,000 (five years).
Number plate fees also surged, with standard private/commercial plates at ₦30,000, articulated vehicles at ₦90,000, and fancy plates pegged at ₦400,000. The JTB attributed the hike to upgraded security features and higher production costs. Motorists can verify details on the FRSC website or state revenue offices.
The board urged compliance from licensing authorities, noting the changes aim to curb fraud. However, the move has sparked mixed reactions, with some Nigerians decrying the timing amid economic hardships.
