The DSS has re-arrested Abdulazeez Obadaki, a Kuje prison escapee accused of masterminding violent attacks in Edo and Kogi states in 2022.
The Department of State Services (DSS) has re-arrested a wanted terror suspect, Abdulazeez Obadaki, who was among the inmates that escaped during the July 2022 attack on the Kuje Correctional Centre in the Federal Capital Territory, according to DAILY POST.
Obadaki was one of the over 800 prisoners, including Boko Haram members, who fled the custodial facility after insurgents overran the prison in a coordinated operation. The Kuje jailbreak, carried out by armed militants, remains one of Nigeria’s most significant security breaches in recent years, drawing widespread concern over the country’s detention and intelligence systems.
Security reports indicate that Obadaki’s activities after his escape were marked by further acts of violence. He was allegedly responsible for orchestrating a series of criminal attacks in 2022, including bank robberies in Uromi, Edo State. In the same year, he was linked to a fatal shooting incident at Deeper Life College in Okene, Kogi State, an attack that heightened security fears across the region.
Authorities say Obadaki had been on the DSS wanted list since the jailbreak, with renewed efforts leading to his arrest. His recapture is being described as a significant breakthrough in ongoing counterterrorism operations aimed at identifying, tracking, and apprehending high-risk fugitives involved in violent extremism and organized criminal activities.
Further investigations into his network and collaborators are reportedly underway.
