“There is nothing to show that people want to celebrate this Easter.”
Nigerians marked Easter with subdued celebrations as economic challenges overshadowed the festive period. Skyrocketing food prices and fuel scarcity led many to forgo traditional festivities. A 50kg bag of rice now sells between N73,000 and N87,000, while a four-litre paint bucket of yellow garri is priced at N2,500.
In Lagos, residents like Clem Iwuanyanwu expressed frustration: “I was not paid salary today (Thursday) and tomorrow (Friday) is public holiday. So, no money this Easter and I don’t know what to do.”
Market traders reported low patronage, attributing it to the economic downturn. Mrs. Muibat Adeola, a rice trader in Alekuwodo Market, lamented: “There is nothing to show that people want to celebrate this Easter.”
Transportation costs also surged, with some families paying up to N250,000 for interstate travel. As a result, many opted to stay home, celebrating modestly or not at all.
