A father in Edo State, Praise Mumbor, has accused a private hospital, Safe Bliss Medical Centre in Benin City, of infecting his one-year and nine-month-old son with HIV through a contaminated blood transfusion.

Speaking to SaharaReporters, Mumbor revealed that neither he nor his wife tested positive for HIV. He stated that the child was diagnosed only after receiving two blood transfusions at the clinic.

“At the military hospital, the results showed the same thing — my wife and I are negative, but our son is positive,” he said. “So my son will have HIV forever.”

Mumbor said he volunteered to donate blood but was told no staff were available to screen him. He paid ₦40,000 for blood from a bank. Following repeated illnesses, a diagnosis at Edo Specialist Hospital revealed the child’s HIV-positive status.

Human rights activist Comrade Glory Omonigho urged authorities to investigate, describing the incident as “a public health emergency.” The Ministry of Health has sealed the hospital for lacking a valid licence.

Edo Police spokesman Yamu Moses Joel confirmed the case is under investigation.

“All I want is justice,” Mumbor stated. “My son will live with this forever because of one hospital’s carelessness.”
