“The former president’s facility was not a target of EFCC’s operations. The suspects were the target,” EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale said.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has dismissed claims that its sting operation in Abeokuta was aimed at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library.
The OOPL management had described the arrest of guests at its guest house as a “calculated attack” on the former president, demanding N3.5bn compensation and a public apology.
However, EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, clarified that the raid targeted 93 suspected internet fraudsters at a hotel within the OOPL precincts. He said the operation followed intelligence that the suspects were holding a pool party to celebrate illicit gains.
“The former president’s facility was not a target of EFCC’s operations. The suspects were the target,” Oyewale said, adding that most were implicated in offences including impersonation and identity theft.
Twenty-three suspects are to be arraigned today before Justice D. Dipeolu at the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, while the rest will follow in batches.
