EFCC is questioning ex-NNPCL boss Mele Kyari over alleged misconduct in Nigeria’s $7.2bn refinery turnaround maintenance programme.

ABUJA—The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is interrogating former Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, over alleged financial misconduct tied to a $7.2 billion refinery turnaround maintenance project.

Sources confirmed Kyari was at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday. “He is here with our investigators at the moment. This is all I can disclose for now,” one source said.

Kyari is being quizzed over financial transactions involving billions of dollars during his tenure as NNPCL chief. The probe comes amid continued scrutiny of funds allocated to Nigeria’s refineries, which remain inactive despite repeated maintenance projects.

Kyari, who was placed on the EFCC’s watch list last year, also faces a court-ordered freeze on four bank accounts linked to him. He led the NNPCL from 2019 until July 2024, overseeing its transition into a limited liability company.
