Former NNPCL chief Mele Kyari was released after EFCC questioning over alleged financial misconduct, as court proceedings on frozen accounts linked to him continue.

Former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, has been released from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja.

Kyari, who arrived at the EFCC headquarters around 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, was questioned over funds allocated for refinery maintenance during his tenure. A source confirmed he was allowed to return home later that night.

His release came amid ongoing investigations into alleged financial misconduct. On August 19, Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, Abuja, ordered the temporary freezing of four Jaiz Bank accounts allegedly linked to Kyari, following an ex parte application by the EFCC. Counsel for the Commission, Ogechi Ujah, told the court that more time was needed to conclude investigations.

According to EFCC filings, over N661 million suspected to be illicit funds was traced to the accounts. The case has been adjourned until September 23 for further updates.
