“Upon profiling, almost all the suspects arrested have been indicted for alleged offenses bordering on impersonation, identity and internet fraud,” EFCC said.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) will on Friday arraign 23 suspected internet fraudsters arrested at a hotel within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The EFCC said the suspects were among 93 persons apprehended during a midnight raid on August 10, while allegedly celebrating their exploits at a pool party. The commission insisted the OOPL was not its target.
However, the OOPL management condemned the raid as “gestapo-like,” alleging that EFCC operatives fired gunshots, injured attendees, and failed to present warrants. It demanded N3.5 billion compensation, an apology within seven days, and threatened legal action.
Managing Director Vitalis Ortese said the operation harmed the library’s reputation and discouraged youth creativity. The EFCC maintained that other indicted suspects would also be arraigned soon.
