After years of delays, Egypt has officially opened the $1 billion Grand Egyptian Museum, showcasing over 100,000 ancient artifacts and aiming to boost tourism.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Saturday inaugurated the long-awaited Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), calling it “a new chapter in the history of the present and the future.”

The $1 billion museum, overlooking the Giza Plateau, was unveiled in a grand ceremony featuring light shows, music, and performances inspired by Pharaonic culture.

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly described the museum as “a dream come true,” crediting Japan for financial and technical support.

Home to more than 100,000 artefacts, including the full collection of King Tutankhamun’s treasures, the GEM is now the world’s largest museum devoted to a single civilisation.

Tourism Minister Sherif Fathy said the museum is expected to attract five million visitors annually, strengthening Egypt’s tourism sector, which brought in $12.5 billion in the first nine months of 2025.
