The Ekiti State Police Command has arrested Helen Kayode, a graduating student of Ekiti State University (EKSU), for allegedly staging her own kidnap to spend time with her boyfriend. According to police spokesperson SP Sunday Abutu, Helen sent a viral message to her sister on May 1, claiming she was kidnapped after boarding the wrong bus, sparking panic in Iworoko-Ekiti and Ado-Ekiti. Investigations revealed she was never abducted but instead stayed with her boyfriend before traveling to Lagos. “The suspect confessed that she sent the false information to stay back in Ado-Ekiti for her birthday,” Abutu said.
Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, Joseph Eribo, condemned the act, warning against false alarms. “Those who spread false information will face the law,” he said, adding that Helen would be charged to court. The police reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining peace in the state.
