Electricity workers have begun a nationwide strike, raising fears of imminent blackouts across Nigeria.
Electricity consumers across Nigeria may face prolonged outages as the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) on Wednesday declared an indefinite strike, accusing the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) of neglecting staff welfare and labour rights.
In a circular signed by Acting General Secretary, Dominic Igwebike, NUEE directed its members nationwide to withdraw their services, citing unpaid salaries, non-provision of tools, and poor working conditions.
“Unfortunately, the TCN management has decided to handle these issues with kid gloves and with a lack of regard for the hardworking staff of TCN,” the union stated.
It listed demands including implementation of the minimum wage, end to casualisation, provision of protective equipment, and settlement of retirement benefits.
The directive, which takes immediate effect, mandates “total compliance” from all electricity workers.
The action raises fears of widespread blackouts, recalling a similar shutdown in June 2024 that crippled supply nationwide.
TCN officials were unavailable for comment at press time.
