Elon Musk announced his departure from the Trump administration Wednesday after leading a controversial effort to cut federal spending as a special adviser overseeing the U.S. DOGE Service. In a post on X, Musk stated his time as a “special government employee”—a role exempt from full ethics disclosures—had concluded under its 130-day annual limit. The billionaire thanked President Trump for the chance to “reduce wasteful spending” but openly opposed the GOP’s new deficit-expanding tax bill.

“I was disappointed to see the massive spending bill… which increases the budget deficit,” Musk told CBS News, breaking with Trump. A White House official anonymously confirmed his exit, noting offboarding began Wednesday night.
