Elon Musk has expressed disappointment over President Donald Trump’s new budget plan, warning it undermines efforts to reduce government waste.
Speaking to CBS Sunday Morning, Musk said, “I was disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly, which increases the budget deficit, not just decreases it, and undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing.”
Musk, who has led the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) since Trump’s second term began, now believes the department’s mission is threatened by the “Big, Beautiful Bill,” which passed the House on May 22. The bill, while funding tax cuts and defense, is expected to add $3.8 trillion to the deficit.
“I think a bill can be big or it can be beautiful, but I don’t know if it can be both,” Musk added.
With reports suggesting Musk will step into a supporting role at the White House, he told The Washington Post, “DOGE is just becoming the whipping boy for everything… It’s an uphill battle.”
