“Funds that rightly belong to the government are siphoned into private pockets.”

The Enugu State House of Assembly has directed the Ministry of Transport and traffic enforcement agencies to stop collecting and depositing traffic fines into private or unofficial accounts.

The lawmakers also ordered the House Committees on Transport and Public Accounts to hold a public hearing on the activities of the Enugu State Road Traffic Management Agency (ESRTMA).

The resolution followed a motion by Okechukwu Aneke (APC, Udi South), who said traffic officers imposed arbitrary fines and diverted funds. “Beyond this, it undermines the financial integrity of our state, as funds that rightly belong to the government are siphoned into private pockets,” he said.

Obiajulu Ugwu (Enugu South Rural) accused ESRTMA officials of extorting motorists, while Okey Mbah (Nkanu East) urged the transport commissioner to train the agency’s officers.

Speaker Uche Ugwu commended the motion’s sponsors and directed the committees to invite the transport commissioner and the public for the hearing.
