Mayor Eric Adams has suspended his re-election bid, triggering political realignment as Cuomo, Mamdani and Sliwa compete for dominance.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams on Sunday announced the suspension of his re-election campaign, reshaping the high-stakes mayoral race. His withdrawal could boost former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who is running as an independent against Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani, though it remains unclear how many of Adams’ supporters will transfer their backing.
President Donald Trump has called for both Adams and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa to exit the race to force a one-on-one contest between Cuomo and Mamdani. “I would say that Cuomo might have a chance of winning if it was a one-on-one,” Trump said, labelling Mamdani a “communist.”
Adams, whose support has dwindled following federal corruption charges later dismissed by the Trump Justice Department, cited financial challenges. “The constant media speculation… and the campaign finance board’s decision to withhold millions of dollars, have undermined my ability to raise the funds needed,” he said.
Despite pressure, Sliwa insists he will remain in the race.
