Erik ten Hag set to take over as Leverkusen head coach

Bayer Leverkusen have reached an agreement in principle to appoint former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag as head coach. The Bundesliga club is finalising documentation to complete the appointment.

Ten Hag, 55, was sacked by Manchester United in October 2024 after winning just four of his first 14 matches that season. Despite winning the Carabao Cup and FA Cup in consecutive campaigns, his second season ended with United in eighth place—its worst league finish since 1990.

“Ten Hag, who was also open to a Premier League return, was on Leverkusen’s shortlist to replace Xabi Alonso,” The Athletic reported earlier.

The Dutchman previously coached Bayern Munich II and led Ajax to the 2018-19 Champions League semi-finals. He joined United in 2022 after winning three Eredivisie titles.

Alonso, who guided Leverkusen to a treble season in 2023-24, is expected to take over from Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid as the Italian prepares for a move to Brazil.
