A former Arkansas police chief serving time for murder and rape escaped from prison Sunday wearing a fake law enforcement uniform, officials said. Grant Hardin, 56, fled the North Central Unit in Calico Rock around 3:40 p.m., according to the Arkansas Department of Corrections. “He was wearing a makeshift outfit designed to mimic law enforcement,” the DOC stated. Officials confirmed he did not have any DOC-issued gear.

Hardin, once Gateway’s police chief, has been serving a 30-year sentence for the 2017 murder of city worker James Appleton and a 50-year sentence for a 1997 rape case. He is considered “extremely dangerous and should not be approached,” the Stone County sheriff’s office warned.

Authorities are using multiple resources to track Hardin and are investigating how he escaped. Anyone with information is urged to contact law enforcement.

Hardin had previously worked as a police officer, constable, and corrections officer before his convictions. The manhunt continues.
