Ex-U.S. Spokesman: Israel ‘almost certainly’ committed war crimes in Gaza

Matt Miller, former US State Department spokesman, has stated that Israel has “without a doubt” committed war crimes in Gaza — a claim that Hamas says exposes Washington’s complicity in the conflict.

A former Biden administration official has said Israel has “without a doubt” committed war crimes in Gaza — drawing swift condemnation from Hamas and raising renewed questions over U.S. policy in the region.

Matt Miller, who served as State Department spokesman, made the remarks during an interview on the Trump 100 podcast, when asked whether Israel’s actions in Gaza constituted genocide. “I don’t think it’s a genocide,” Miller said. “But I think it is without a doubt true that Israel has committed war crimes.”

In response, Hamas issued a statement calling Miller’s comments a “significant admission that condemns the occupation and exposes its crimes.” The group further claimed that Miller’s words revealed he had been “forced to adhere to the US government’s official narrative” while in office.

“This admission does not only condemn the occupation but also holds Washington directly responsible as an active partner in the war crimes and genocide,” a Hamas spokesperson said, citing U.S. military aid and political cover for Israel.

When pressed by Sky News on why he hadn’t spoken out while in office, Miller replied, “When you’re at the podium, you’re not expressing your personal opinion.”

The Israeli government, responding via spokesman David Mencer, maintained that it upholds “the highest levels of international law,” and emphasized the importance of investigations into such claims.

But Miller questioned the effectiveness of those investigations. “We’re not seeing Israeli soldiers held accountable,” he said. “It’s an open question whether they are going to.”
