A woman refused her ex-husband’s new partner’s demand to drop his surname, insisting she kept it for her daughter and career.
A woman has defended her decision to keep her ex-husband’s last name after his new girlfriend demanded she change it, calling it “weird” for them to remain linked.
Writing on Reddit, the woman explained she had been married for four years and chose to adopt her ex-husband’s surname after their daughter was born so the family would share the same name. “We divorced in early 2022 and I kept the last name because my daughter still has it and again, neither of us cared much,” she wrote.
She said her ex’s fiancée recently told her the “only thing standing in the way” of their marriage was her refusal to change her name, even offering to pay for the process. The woman rejected the idea, noting her ex owed $20,000 in child support. “My name carries some weight beyond my marriage and divorce,” she added.
Commenters overwhelmingly supported her, calling the fiancée’s demand unreasonable.
