Medical experts have warned that excessive use of perfumes and sprays containing chemicals like parabens and phthalates may cause cancer, infertility, and hormonal disorders.

Leading Nigerian medical experts have raised concerns over the excessive use of perfumes, deodorants, and body sprays containing harmful chemicals, warning that these products may lead to cancer, infertility, and other chronic health issues.

In interviews with PUNCH Healthwise, physicians identified ingredients like parabens, phthalates, aluminium, and triclosan as endocrine disruptors—chemicals that interfere with hormone regulation. These substances are linked to menstrual irregularities, early puberty, thyroid dysfunction, diabetes, and hormone-sensitive cancers.

Professor Andrew Uloko of Bayero University Kano stated that while short-term effects like skin irritation and respiratory discomfort may be reversible, long-term complications such as cancer or diabetes may persist even after discontinuation.

He called for stricter regulation of cosmetics by agencies like NAFDAC and SON, and advised consumers to opt for organic or chemical-free alternatives.

Similarly, Professor Dasetima Altraide, President of the Nigerian Association of Dermatologists, warned of hormonal disruptions and urged Nigerians to choose safer, certified products.

Experts stressed public awareness and tighter control to avoid a surge in non-communicable diseases.
