“…criminals are exploiting the personal details people share online, from travel plans to family activities,” she said.

ABUJA – Cybersecurity expert Loveth Odozor has warned that kidnappers are increasingly using social media to identify and track victims, calling for urgent adoption of digital safety measures in Imo State.

Odozor, who holds a Master’s degree from Yeshiva University, New York, said criminal groups now employ tools such as social media tracking, phone hacking, and online surveillance to target victims with “disturbing accuracy.”

“Kidnapping is no longer just a physical crime; it has a strong digital component. Criminals are exploiting the personal details people share online, from travel plans to family activities,” she said.

She noted that platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are key intelligence sources for kidnappers, often revealing victims’ real-time locations.

Her recommendations include grassroots cyber safety education, safe online practices, use of digital forensics, and stronger collaboration between authorities and global cybersecurity bodies.

“With the right resources, knowledge, and community engagement, we can turn technology into a shield for our people,” she added.
