The FCTA has cleared over 1,000 illegal shacks in Karsana, sparing indigenous homes while linking the exercise to improved security.

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has demolished more than 1,000 shacks and illegal structures along a major road corridor in Karsana, near Bunkoro District, Gwarinpa.

Director of Development Control, Muktar Galadima, disclosed this during a citywide sanitation exercise on Monday. He said the demolition targeted illegal squatters and individuals of “questionable character,” but deliberately spared indigenous homes. “So far, we’ve cleared more than 1,000 shanties, and we’re still progressing. The entire road stretch is about 2 kilometres, filled with similar illegal structures,” Galadima stated.

He added that coordination with the Department of Resettlement and Compensation was ongoing to avoid disrupting indigenous communities.

FCTA Director of Security Services, Adamu Gwary, represented by Dr. Peter Olumuji, said the clearance would enhance safety for nearby estates. “There is a clear nexus between development control and the security of lives and property,” he noted, adding that shanties often serve as hideouts for criminals.
