Federal Government cancels 5% tax on voice and data services

The Federal Government has abolished the 5% tax on calls and data, bringing relief to over 171 million telecom users.

The Federal Government has revoked the 5% excise duty on telecommunications services, including voice calls and data usage.

The National Orientation Agency disclosed this on Thursday, quoting the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Dr. Aminu Maida. He said President Bola Tinubu ordered the removal of the tax during discussions on the Finance Act.

Maida explained that the decision would ease cost pressures on over 171 million telecom users, many of whom had already faced a 50% tariff increase this year.

The levy, introduced in 2022 under former President Muhammadu Buhari, was widely criticised by operators and consumer groups as an additional burden on Nigerians.

Telecom operators, under ALTON, had warned that the duty was counterproductive, arguing that Nigeria already carried one of the highest telecom tax burdens in sub-Saharan Africa.
