The Federal Government has denied reports that it raised the minimum admission age for Junior Secondary School 1 (JSS1) to 12 years.
In a statement on Friday, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry of Education, Boriowo Folasade, described the reports as “misleading and inaccurate.”
“For the avoidance of doubt, the minimum age for admission into JSS1 remains 10 years,” she said. “Any suggestion to the contrary is misleading and should be disregarded by the public and all education stakeholders.”
Boriowo added that the minimum age for university admission also remains 16 years, regardless of how early a student finishes secondary school.
“The Ministry maintains that this age benchmark ensures the cognitive and emotional readiness of students for higher academic engagement,” she said.
She urged the public and media to confirm information through official government channels to prevent the spread of false reports. The Ministry stressed hat no policy change had been made.
