Barrister Onyedikachi Ifedi, a member of Nnamdi Kanu’s legal team, has accused the Federal Government of “propaganda” while insisting that there is no legal basis to keep the IPOB leader in detention.

A member of Nnamdi Kanu’s defence team, Barrister Onyedikachi Ifedi, has faulted what he termed “government-sponsored propaganda” against the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), insisting the Federal Government has no legal grounds to continue holding the separatist leader.

In a statement, Ifedi said attempts to brand IPOB as terrorist were political theatre, arguing that the “civilized world” had instead labelled Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) a terrorist group.

He maintained that Kanu’s abduction from Kenya in June 2021 amounted to extraordinary rendition, prohibited under both Nigerian and international law.

“The Court of Appeal had nullified proceedings in FRN v. Kanu, but the Supreme Court somersaulted in December 2023,” he said.

Ifedi further argued that Kanu is being prosecuted under the repealed Terrorism Prevention (Amendment) Act 2013, despite its replacement by the Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act 2022.

“Every count predicated on the TPAA 2013 is a legal corpse,” he added.
