The Federal Government has rejected allegations of genocide against Christians, insisting Nigeria’s security challenges affect all faiths equally.
The Federal Government has dismissed claims on some international platforms alleging that terrorist groups in Nigeria are conducting genocide against Christians.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Muhammed Idris, in a statement yesterday in Abuja, described the reports as “false, baseless, despicable, and divisive,” warning that such narratives distort Nigeria’s complex security challenges.
“Portraying Nigeria’s security challenges as a targeted campaign against a single religious group oversimplifies a multifaceted situation. It plays into the hands of terrorists and criminals who seek to divide Nigerians,” Idris said.
The Minister stressed that violent extremism affects Muslims, Christians, and non-religious citizens alike. He noted that over 13,500 terrorists have been neutralised and nearly 10,000 hostages rescued since May 2023. He also confirmed the arrest of top leaders of ANSARU, an Al-Qaeda affiliate.
Reaffirming Nigeria’s multi-religious identity, Idris said, “Christianity is neither endangered nor marginalised in Nigeria,” urging international media to avoid sensationalism.
