The outcome of this review must align with broader national development objectives
The Federal Government has inaugurated a committee to reform the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), aiming to strengthen its impact on youth development and national growth.
The committee was launched Tuesday in Abuja with representatives from government, civil society, and private sectors. Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, said the NYSC has “played an important role in building national unity and helping young people since 1973.”
He noted rising concerns over corps members’ safety, outdated infrastructure, and the scheme’s relevance in today’s socio-economic climate. “These challenges also present opportunities that require urgent, visionary, and determined action,” he said.
The committee will review existing policies, consult nationwide, and propose reforms to laws, funding, operations, and monitoring systems.
Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, announced plans to launch a Teachers’ Corps and a Medical Corps to serve rural communities.
Special Adviser Hadiza Usman emphasized the importance of aligning youth programs with technical and vocational training.
