The federal government has announced the closure of over 13.5 million social media accounts and removal of nearly 59 million offensive posts in 2024, citing violations of Nigeria’s Code of Practice.
The federal government has closed down about 13,597,057 social media accounts for offensive content and breaches of the Code of Practice by users across platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X.
The figure was contained in the Code of Practice 2024 Compliance Report submitted by operators of major platforms including Google, Microsoft, and TikTok.
According to the report, a total of 58,909,112 harmful posts were removed, while 754,629 user complaints were recorded. Of these, 420,439 contents were removed and later re-uploaded following user appeals.
In a statement on Wednesday, NITDA’s spokesperson, Hajiya Hadiza Umar, said, “The compliance reports provide valuable insights into the platforms’ efforts to address user safety concerns in line with the Code of Practice and the platforms’ community guidelines.”
She added that the measures reflect Nigeria’s commitment to fostering a safer digital space, urging continued collaboration among regulators, industry stakeholders, and civil society to enhance online safety and digital literacy.
