FG to give cash transfer to 2.2m poor households — Minister

In the next few days to come, before the end of August, we are going to reach out to 2.2 million households

The Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Tanko Sununu, announced that the federal government plans to extend its cash transfer programme to 2.2 million poor households before the end of August, under the Conditional Cash Transfer scheme .

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Sununu explained that the National Social Safety-Net Coordinating Office (NASSCO) will “harvest vulnerable Nigerians based on their lowest cadre in the national social register” to identify beneficiaries .

He added that N419 billion has already been disbursed to around five million Nigerians, with 71 per cent of the support going to the north and 21 per cent to the south .

At an inauguration event for the House’s ad hoc flood-management committee in Abuja, the minister further warned of a “critical humanitarian challenge”, citing over three million internally displaced persons, dwindling global aid, and heightened risks of hunger and malnutrition . He also highlighted efforts under NSIP and GEEP, including interest-free N300,000 loans to help smallholder farmers recover their livelihoods .
