The federal government, through SGF George Akume, warned that recent U.S. statements alleging a “Christian genocide” in Nigeria have emboldened violent groups, insisting that no credible evidence supports such claims and calling instead for stronger Nigeria, U.S. security collaboration.

The federal government has warned that recent U.S. statements portraying Nigeria’s insecurity as a “Christian genocide” have inadvertently emboldened violent groups seeking to exploit sectarian narratives. Speaking in Abuja, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume said such claims are inaccurate, dangerous, and unsupported by any credible international body, stressing that Boko Haram, ISWAP, and North-West bandits target Nigerians across religious lines.

Akume urged the U.S. to prioritise intelligence sharing, technology and equipment support instead of public labels that distort the country’s security realities.

He outlined the historical, economic and geopolitical factors shaping Nigeria’s insecurity and reaffirmed that Nigeria is a secular state committed to balanced representation, national unity, and deeper strategic collaboration with the United States.
