Iran says the US refusal to grant visas to its delegation for the World Cup draw could threaten its full participation in the tournament.
The United States has refused entry to an Iranian delegation scheduled to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup draw in Washington on December 5.
Iranian Football Federation (FFI) spokesperson Amir-Mehdi Alawi confirmed that FFI President Mehdi Taj, Head Coach Amir Ghalenoei, and seven other officials were denied visas.
The FFI is now appealing to FIFA President Gianni Infantino to intervene within two weeks. “We expect FIFA to act swiftly to ensure our rightful participation,” Alawi said.
The US entry restrictions, first introduced under former President Donald Trump, remain a source of tension between the two nations. Analysts warn the decision could hinder Iran’s broader involvement in the tournament.
Iran has proposed that, if visa issues persist, its matches be held in Canada or Mexico. Sports experts say failure to resolve the matter could undermine the spirit of the competition.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be jointly hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico.
