YOLA, NIGERIA — Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State on Thursday presented 23 brand new SUVs to judges, saying the gesture was part of his “unwavering commitment to strengthening the justice system.”

“I have today handed over 23 brand new SUVs to our judiciary officers as part of our unwavering commitment to strengthening the justice system in Adamawa State,” Fintiri posted on X.

The vehicles, 2024 GAC GS8 4WD models, are valued between ₦1.7bn and ₦1.8bn, according to market prices. Meanwhile, several court infrastructure and digitisation projects across the state remain underfunded or stalled.

Budget performance documents show that ₦1bn earmarked for area court renovations in 2024 remains untouched. In Madagali, only ₦186m of the ₦600m needed to convert a building into a court has been released. The state’s e-filing portal and judiciary website are largely non-functional.

Adamawa, with just 22 judges for 4.9 million residents, continues to face case backlogs.

The governor is also a defendant in a pending High Court suit challenging the creation of the Fufore Emirate. Plaintiffs argue the move violates the state’s chiefship law.

The case, still active, is adjourned after multiple hearings with no final judgment yet delivered.
