“Sadly, a number of the victims we’ve found were minors.”

At least 23 people, including children, were killed and 12 others injured in a fire and explosion at a convenience store in downtown Hermosillo, northern Mexico, on Saturday, officials said.

“Sadly, a number of the victims we’ve found were minors,” Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo said in a video, adding that the injured were taken to local hospitals. “I have ordered an extensive and transparent investigation to determine the causes of the incident and figure out those responsible,” he added.

Sonora Attorney General Gustavo Salas Chávez said preliminary findings showed the victims died from “inhalation of toxic gases.” “At this time, we have no indication that leads us to presume the fire was intentional,” he said.

Images on social media showed the Waldo’s store engulfed in flames. President Claudia Sheinbaum offered condolences “to the families and loved ones of those who died” and said federal support was being sent to assist victims.
