A fire on Monday destroyed part of the Rivers State Secretariat in Port Harcourt, with officials confirming the incident and ongoing firefighting efforts.
A section of the Rivers State Government Secretariat in Port Harcourt was on Monday gutted by fire, affecting offices within the complex housing the state’s Pension Board.
According to The Cable, the cause of the fire has yet to be determined. The incident occurred weeks after President Bola Tinubu reinstated the suspended governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and members of the State House of Assembly, following months of political tension in the state.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information, Honour Sirawoo, confirmed the fire outbreak but did not disclose if any casualties were recorded.
“Firefighters from both the State and Federal Fire Services are currently at the scene, working to put out the flames,” Sirawoo said.
President Tinubu had earlier declared a state of emergency in the oil-rich Niger Delta state on March 18, 2025.
