A fire incident at Egbin Power Station on Tuesday has disrupted power supply to parts of Lagos and Ogun, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) said in a statement on August 6.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) says a transformer fire at Egbin Power Plc has disrupted power supply in parts of Lagos and Ogun States. The incident, which occurred around 6:30 am on Tuesday, damaged TCN’s 150MVA transformer at the Egbin Transmission Substation.

Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs, said in a statement posted Thursday that the fire originated from a faulty 33kV instrument transformer (CT/VT) installed by Egbin Power, which ignited and tore open the tank of TCN’s transformer, causing an oil leak.

“As a result of the incident, there is a temporary reduction in bulk power supply to Ikorodu and Odogunyan substations… as well as Sagamu Line 1, Sagamu Line 2, and Maryland Line 2,” Mbah said.

A 47MW load was immediately diverted to another transformer now operating under strain. TCN noted that the capacity deficit has led to load-shedding and promised urgent action to restore power, apologising for the inconvenience.
