A massive fire at Shuwaki Market in Kano destroyed over 500 shops, with officials blaming the incident on drunk individuals residing in the market.

The Kano State Fire Service has confirmed a massive fire outbreak that destroyed more than 500 shops at Shuwaki Market in Gari Local Government Area of Kano State.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Service’s spokesperson, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, said the incident occurred around 3:25 p.m. on Wednesday. A distress call was received from Commander Abdulmalik Muhammed of the Gari Fire Station, prompting firefighters from the Danbatta Fire Station to respond.

On arrival, they found that about 529 of roughly 1,000 temporary stalls, covering an area of 3,000 by 2,500 feet, had already been destroyed. “The crew on duty… found that about 529 temporary stalls were burnt to the ground,” Abdullahi stated.

Despite the scale of the blaze, firefighters contained it before it spread further, using a fire jet from Comm 9. Preliminary investigation revealed that the fire was likely caused by drunk individuals living within the market premises.
