A unique Alzheimer’s day facility aimed at supporting both patients and their families has opened in Amityville, Long Island.
The Barbara Rabinowitz Education & Resource Center, developed by the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, features specialized areas like a transit room with real LIRR train seats and an airplane row to help families learn how to travel with loved ones.
“I’d never even imagined something like this — it would have just made life easier,” said Michael Rabinowitz, who helped launch the center in memory of his mother. “It’s a whole new world for you.”
The 11,500-square-foot center offers memory screenings and therapeutic activities such as poetry, karaoke, bingo, and word games. Rabinowitz credited former state Sen. Chuck Fuschilio, now AFA CEO, for securing the site.
“There was a higher calling, so we all won,” Fuschilio said. “This center will fill a significant need for so many families.”
