The Kpautagi community in Mokwa, Niger State, was struck by severe flooding on Saturday following an overnight downpour, displacing residents and prompting fresh concerns over the government’s preparedness.
A verified video obtained by SaharaReporters showed submerged homes and distressed residents wading through waterlogged streets. The torrential rain, which began Friday night, continued into Saturday morning.
Casualties and the full extent of damage remain unconfirmed as of press time.
Efforts to reach state officials for comment were unsuccessful.
This incident comes weeks after SaharaReporters documented earlier flooding in Mokwa, which claimed over 200 lives and displaced thousands.
A review of the state’s budget documents revealed Niger spent N5.762 billion on honorarium and sitting allowances between January 2024 and March 2025—more than the N5.1 billion allocated to erosion and flood control.
Despite receiving over N3.2 billion in ecology funds in 2024, residents allege insufficient infrastructure or emergency measures have been implemented to protect flood-prone communities.
